The Museum at Warm Springs
"The dream of a tribal museum for the confederated tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon began over four decades ago" The Museum at Warm Springs is many things, not the least of which is a striking piece of architecture, a 25,000 square-foot structure that packs an emotional wallop all too seldom felt in contemporary public buildings. But most of all, perhaps, The Museum exists as an answer to a question that has troubled Native Americans in general and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs in particular for most of the past century. Can this nation`s indigenous peoples take any meaningful steps on their initiative, under their control, to halt the erosion of their traditions, the dispersal of their sacred artifacts, and the loss of their very identity as a culture? |

Pelton Dam Wildlife 0verlook
From the gated parking area, a gravel trail connects two uncovered wooden platforms, approximately 400` apart, for a panoramic view of Pelton Re-regulating Reservoir. Each deck has a railing with bench seating. Because the deck is elevated and only 300` from the water, you have an unobstructed shoreline view of 2/3-mile. The water level fluctuates several feet daily because of hydroelectric project operations, and the exposed mudflats attract shorebirds, wading birds, and waterfowl. |

Petersen Rock Garden
Petersen Rock Garden is one of those roadside attractions that defies description. You`ve just got to visit, and you`ll be glad you did. The garden started in 1935 as the pet project of Danish immigrant Rasmus Petersen. Petersen settled on a large piece of land off Highway 97 between Bend and Redmond and set about creating castles with moats, fountains, towers, bridges, and even miniature models of famous buildings like the Statue of Liberty, all built from rocks, shells, bits of glass, and other found objects. Gravel pathways meander around the property, inviting visitors to see what curiosity will await them around the next bend. For decades, each monument to Petersen`s imagination has delighted the young and young at heart. Petersen Rock Garden, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also maintains a gift shop and a rock museum where visitors can explore rare geodes, agates, fossils, and more. Admission is a suggested donation, and the garden is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. |
